Break Granite Quietly 10 m from Homes By Using Drilling and Splitting All-in-one Machine–Road Construction Case

The Problem
A road construction contractor encountered hard granite midway through the project, at a location less than 10 m from residential houses. Hydraulic breakers were ruled out immediately: at 100–120 dB, the noise, vibration and flying debris would disrupt residents and risk official complaints and work stoppages. The site also included hillside rock on steep slopes, where manual handling and frequent equipment relocation were impractical, and the contractor preferred intelligent, low-labor equipment.

The Solution
After reviewing the full scope, two static-breaking options were evaluated: a piston rock splitter and the Integrated Hydraulic Rock Drill and Splitter. For the combined roadside and hillside scope, the integrated unit was the better fit.

It drills and splits in one pass with the same machine, so no separate rock drill is needed for pre-drilling, no additional equipment has to be bought or rented, and there is no frequent repositioning between faces. One excavator and one operator complete both operations, and the machine works on any face at any angle, including steep hillsides.

Rock is broken by static hydraulic pressure rather than impact. This means no shockwave, no vibration, no fly rock, and noise of approximately 75–85 dB — acceptable to operate within 10 m of occupied buildings, versus the 100–120 dB of a breaker.

The Results
Efficiency: integrated drill-and-split is roughly 3–4× faster than breakers and about 50–60% faster than separate drill + splitter setups. On one documented site, a 500 m² bench that took 8 hours with separate equipment was finished in 4.5 hours with the integrated unit.
Cost: no separate rock drill purchase or rental, one operator instead of two or three, and single-machine fuel and maintenance. Labor on that site dropped from three people to two.
Continuity: construction continued with residents only 10 m away — zero noise complaints, zero work stoppages.
