Calcite is a medium-hard brittle rock with a compressive strength of 60–80MPa and well-developed natural joints, which is easily over-crushed into fine powder under violent impact. Facing strict explosive control policies and low-efficiency hydraulic breaker construction, the client adopted our LOX rock splitting system to eliminate material waste and achieve high-volume, high-quality calcite mining.
Challenges
The calcite quarry faced multiple critical production bottlenecks:
– Difficult explosive approval: Strict environmental and safety regulations restrict traditional explosive blasting, making long-term stable large-scale mining unavailable.
– Severe over-crushing waste: With 60–80MPa compressive strength and high brittleness, calcite is easily pulverized by repeated hydraulic breaker impact, producing excessive fine powder and reducing the qualified block stone ratio.
– Low production capacity: A 32-ton excavator with a hydraulic breaker only delivered 280m³ per day, far below the daily target of 4200m³ for aggregate and industrial calcite supply.
– High operational costs: Long working hours, frequent equipment wear and massive material waste raised construction costs and reduced profit margins.

Based on the physical properties of 60–80MPa brittle calcite, the client’s existing 90mm drilling equipment and project budget, we formulated a fully customized LOX liquid oxygen rock splitting solution.
Tailored to the site’s layered joint rock structure and cost-control demands, our technical team designed a targeted drilling layout:
3m hole spacing, 3m row spacing, 8m hole depth, 2-row staggered blasting pattern.

Field Results
The client conducted trial blasting with 16 LOX rock splitting pipes. Liquid oxygen vaporizes instantly in confined boreholes and generates strong expansion pressure, splitting calcite uniformly from bottom to surface. The blasted stone features complete block shape and uniform particle size with minimum fine powder.
The single blast achieved a total output of 3300m³. Compared with the original 280m³ daily output of hydraulic breakers, the LOX rock splitting system boosted comprehensive efficiency by 12 times. It successfully solved explosive approval obstacles, low productivity and material waste issues, realizing stable and high-value calcite quarry production.
Conclusion
